XPS400 wont burn dvd's and no sound HELP

The story begins like this... the other day I wanted to burn a dvd which I have done numerous times before on this machine with the same verbatim DVD+R discs but for some odd reason the program I use to burn keeps telling me to insert some blank media into my burner (phillips dvd8801) so I tried other discs, same problem kept coming up. I then noticed the drive name would change from DVD-RW Drive G: to CD Drive G: after inserting one of my blank dvd+r discs. Also a windows box pops up asking me if I want to burn a cd in windows media player and several other options, strange.
So I went online and searched till my eyes hurt. I found there were many other people with almost the exact same problem and it seemed to arise after windows does an automatic update. So I did a system restore to about 4 months ago, and I still had the same problem. I rolled back drivers, I re-installed drivers, I updated drivers, same damn problem.
I then decided to reformat using symantec ghost which is built into my computer, and because it's built into my computer I do not have an operating system disc. But after reformatting I still had the same problem! And now I discover problem number 2. I have no sound. So I re-install my soundcard drivers, update those, and it says everything is working correctly but I have no sound. I then let windows automatic update install a bunch of crap, still nothin. So I plugged my speakers into the built in speaker jack on the motherboard, and there is no sound coming from there either! I'm about to go crazy this computer is only a year and 5 months old. My packing slip that came with my computer from dell says I have a 2 year limited warranty, yet when I go on their website and enter the service tag it says my warranty has expired...
