canon scanner and windows xp problem

I have a canon canoscan 20 scanner that I am trying to install the drivers for on windows xp.
It is an older scanner but I have both the original cd and the new drivers supposidly for xp. The problem is that regardless of what I try the hardware will not locate the driver.This is making me crazy. Does anyone know whats up with this compatibility problem with windows xp and the older canon printers and scanners? )PS I have an older all in one printer scanner fax that I can`t get to work either). please help if you can shed any light on this ...thanks
