Acer Aspire No Sound Problem

Acer Aspire 5610Z, Vista Home Premium, Realtek for sound, problem no sound. Can hear a hiss in earphones that goes away when audio is muted. I have downloaded and installed new driver. Any ideas or familiarity with this problem?
