laptop display fades

Anyone come across this before - the screen on my Dell Inspiron 600m fades around 20 seconds or so after booting? The initial appearance is fine and the screen can been seen with difficulty after fading, it is also fine if I connect to an external monitor and it remains fine while connected but is not visible on the laptop monitor. The laptop is plugged into the charger, so I assume this is not a battery issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

Is your laptop actually charging properly with your adapter? If you remove the battery, and plug in the charger, does the battery indicator light show up on the screen? The problem you're getting usually relates to a charging issue.

1 thing you could do is update your BIOS & VGA drivers. Failing that. If it connects fine to an external monitor, this means your motherboard is OK. It could narrow it down to your inverter (Which can be replaced easily) Or your back light / screen that is failing.

Have it checked out by Dell or a local PC expert.
