xp hard drive to vista unit

my xp computers power supply went out and took the motherboaed with it[intel 845 series], so i bought a new vista emachines T5234. have installed my old ide drive as slave on ide cable[the master is hooked by sata]. the master has 8 posts, like where a jumper would be , but no jumper. the computer recognises the old hd and labled it drive E. my problem is: i can't open most of the stuff in it. the oridginal computer was password controlled, i'm the owner administratorn etc on both machines. it tells me i don't have the proper authority. i've tried following the procedure on the screen to change authority, but with no luck. am guessing this is a simple problem, but then i'm pretty simple. any help would be greatly appreciatted. hope i'm doing this right. thankyou, loren
