External Speakers stopped working

HI. Last week I installed windows vista premium home edition on my Dell Inspiron 6000. After installing vista, I noticed when I plugged in my external speakers to the headphone jack they no longer emit sound, however the internal speakers work. I have been looking for a solution but cannot find one. I think i downloaded the most recent realtek audio driver, and that did not help. Pleaseeee help! I want to be able to use my external speakers again. P.S. i tested the speakers on my ipod and they work..they are not the problem. THanks
