No Sound - Unknown Device??
I'll try to explain this as thoroughly as possible:
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. I recently had to reformat and went from Windows Media Center to Windows XP Home. My sound worked fine for a day or so, but then I suddenly began getting an error message when I tried to play anything in Window's Media Payer. The error is as follows:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be
functioning correctly."
Naturally, I checked out my device manager. There is a (?) next to "Other Devices" and when I expand the list, each item has both a (?) and a (!) next to it. The items are: Base System Device, Base System Device, Base System Device (yes...three??), SM Bus Controller, and Video Controller (VGA Compatible). Each is not functioning correctly.
Then, under Sound, video and game controllers, there is an Unknown Device with a (!) next to it. I've tried EVERYTHING to identify this or get rid of it and I can't figure it out for the life of me.
When I get into the Hardware Update Wizard and I click on this Unknown Device, the wizard wants me to install software for MEDIA (very original). I try to install it and get the following error message:
"The software you are installing for this hardware:
Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver
has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. (Tell me why this testing is important.)
Continuing your installation of this software may impair of destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passes Windows Logo testing."
I clicked Continue Anyway and got the following error message:
"There was a problem installing this hardware:
MEDIA
An error occurred during the installation of the device.
Driver is not intended for this platform."
I've tried updating all my drivers, but no luck. Nothing has worked...
This is the information I have on my computer:
