Help Me.. External Hard Drive... I goofed....

I tried to convert my external hard drive from fat32 to nfts and I think I goofed big time...My computer no longer recognizes the external hard drive. It does not show up in computer management. Please help! Did I lose all my data?

I am running WindowsXP. The external hard drive is called My book. It use to be recognized as the F:/ drive

I was trying to change from fat32 to ntfs...I went to the command prompt, typed convert f: /fs:ntfs, something came up for me to name volume (I Think) but the instructions I was following said if there wasn't a name there it was ok. well I pressed enter. Everything has gone downhill from there. I shut down my computer thinking everything was ok. this morning I logged on..at first I saw all my folders...when I went to open them they were empty...I went back to device management and the f drive no longer exsisted...all I have is the c and d drive. when I plug in the external drive it recognizes an external device but I can't locate it. I have a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500GB. Before I do anything else I am reaching out for help...if there is a chance to recover my information I would be most appreciative.
