Stuttering Sound

I've not been able to find an answer to this problem anywhere, so I'm hoping this is the place!
My audio seems to stutter or rather make this firegun noise every few seconds. Sometimes it happens more frequently than others. Also, the mouse seems to "stutter" with it, and even when no music is playing the mouse will still stutter sometimes.I've checked the task manager and there's no program that indicates it's causing this.
Also this happens even before Windows XP fully enters into the desktop so I think it might be an actual problem with the sound card.
Is that possible and how do I fix this?

System: WinXPsp2
Motherboard: easton d815eea
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: D815EA
System Model: EA81510A
BIOS: Default System BIOS
Processor: Intel Pentium III, ~790MHz
Memory: 382MB RAM
Sound Device: Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller

Late response, but thought if theres anyone else out there having audio stuttering problems in games etc, this suggestion might help: check in device manage that your IDE/SATA controllers are using udma, and not PIO. PIO can cause sound/video to halt while the HDD's are being accessed, from my understanding. You also have to make sure your bios is set to UDMA for your HDD's as well.
Hope it helps!
