How do i know if my onboard sound is not messed up or shortcircuited

Hello. I have recently re-installed xp home edition because i had no audio device problems before. Now it has an audio device using realtek ac 97. The funny part is that i have no sound coming out not even system sounds. I have tried conncecting headphones, speakers, monitor speakers with no luck. How do i know if my onboard sound is not messed up or shortcircuited or if it is receiving power? Any thing helps

Hi killzone1643.
First thing first disable every audio driver else, if any. Then try to get into your bios and see if "on board audio" in "enabled". Maybe It's Auto or Disable.
If your Realtek doesn't work yet, download and install these:
