Slow read and write with a Pioneer 215D SATA

I have recently replaced my burner with a Pioneer 215D SATA Dual Layer burner. I cannot read or write above about 3X, I use Verbatim 16X and Aone 8X dual layer. Even reading brand new shop bought DVD's I only read at about 3X, I have enbled and disabled DMA numerous times, to no avail, I have upgraded the firmware from 1.6 to 1.8, replaced the cable twice, reformatted and reloaded windows XP Pro SP2 twice. The burns are fine and always verify, its just frustrating that it is so slow.
I have a ECS Extreme MB 64bit 4000+ processor and 2G of ram, the previous Sony u120 worked fine and burnt and read quickly until it died of old age
Any help appreciated
Thanks
Paul

Possibly your writing software doesn't support it without an update. Maybe even the writer needs a firmware update.
