My sound works for about 15 minutes, then it dies!

Everytime I log in to windows, my sound works fine, but 15 minutes in, the sound mutes itself. I go to the control panel and I click on sound and it still says my SoundMAX driver is there, yet my sound still doesn't come back until I reboot my computer. When I reboot, the sound comes back, but goes away again another 15 minutes in! Also for some odd reason, when the sound goes away, my computer begins acting very slow and dumb. Why?

OS: Windows XP
Pentium 4
180 GB Hard Drive
Board: Asus P5PE-VM

I'm beginning to think my motherboard is dying on me...
Is there a way to fix this problem?

A regular 15 minutes is unlikely to be your mainboard snuffing it.
A log of your startup and running processes will be handy, HF.

do u have any anti virus...
try to scan ur com...
but u must have recently updated anti virus devinition...

I got the same problem too...mine one also about 30 min, then no more sound, it start with some cracking sound, then no more sound...But ho, when i restart, it came back. More over, i use speaker or headphone, then no prob also.
I reformat few times already and even try to update my driver.
Mine is very low end (it used to be ok 4 years back)ha...lol

But to be frank, the rest of the laptop still function very well, after i remove every accessories of microsoft, my computer are quite fast. (I use 3rd party software mostly which is more stable n consume less mem)
