sony vaio internet connect problem

hi could some one please help me out ive got a sony vaio vgc mi desktop computer and i have decided to go broadband.
The problem i have is i can't connect to the internet at all via direct broadband cable and ive even tried a pci network adapter card and still nothing, the card tells me that it is connected but i cant view any web pages.
i do think it might be a driver fault but cant find any driver updates. Could you please help im pulling my hair out now.
