maxtor external hard drive problem!

my computer is not longer recognizing my maxtor 500gb external hard drive. the green light indicates it is connected to the computer but i cant access my files as it show up nowhere on the computer itself.
iv got loads on information on there and any info will be greatly appreciated as iv run out of ideas myself,

I had same problem with Western Digital 1TB external drive and I use MS recommendation to fix it.

thanks for the reply but it still hasnt worked and is not recognizing the hardware, even though the device is indicating it is connected

It seems to be cable through which you are connecting or the connector of maxtor 500gb external hard drive causing you problem. Just check it before taking any decision.
