Plays CDs but not DVDs anymore

I recently had to perform a clean re-install of XP-Home. The OS is on a CD, no problem. I then put in the drivers disk which is a DVD and it won't read. In explorer the DVD drive changes to a CD drive and say the disk is blank. I used another PC to read it and transfer to an ext HD so I could load my drivers that way. Still, the DVD player/burner will not recognize DVD media of any kind, so I did it all again (re-install OS) and there is no change. I tried messing with the filters by running 314060.exe. It said it fixed something and to restart. No change. In device manager it says the drive is working properly. Any ideas please.

DVD playback needs a DVD decoder, which still isn't standard (as far as I know). You need to install another piece of software which includes a dvd decoder, such as Nero or another commercial offering.

If you could play them before, then you need to reinstall the software you used, which included the DVD decoder.
