Static in SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio system

One of my computer clients is experiencing static coming from her speakers as her desktop loads.

The system is a custom-built IBM-compatible computer:
Intel Celeron Processor
Hard Drive is ST380811QAS 74.5 GB capacity
Operating system is Windows XP Home Edition
Virus protection is AVG 7.5
When I access Device Manager, the system shows:
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio
Unimodem half-duplex audio device with legacy audio drivers

I have downloaded an updated driver for the SoundMax audio, but I am wondering if there is something else I need to install on this system to eliminate the static. Is there something I am overlooking?

Any help would be appreciated
