Laptop keeps restarting

Hello,
I must say first that I am completely new to both this forum and computers. I don't know my hard drive from my battery and so as much as I would appreciate the fancy technological terms and devices that I've seen people express here, they will go right over my head. So if you could describe things in layman's terms I would be most appreciative.
My laptop is a DELL Insprion 1505 and since November 4th it would not work. The computer said while I was starting it up that the hard drive was missing. Eventually I took it to Geek Squad and they told me that the hard drive hadn't come loose on its own, but that someone had taken it out and for whatever reason put it back in without securing the bolts. Why someone would do this and how they would do it without my noticing is beyond me, but once all was put in its proper place, nothing was missing, and nothing nasty it seemed had been put on my computer. Until about a week later when I noticed that my internet connection was not working properly. It was only giving me a local connection and even though I disconnected and reconnected my wire it wouldn't work. So I restarted it. It began to restart normally, and then reverted back to the beginning without getting to the screen where I access my part of the computer (the one where it says my name and then guest right beside it, I have no idea what that is called.) Besides the fact that it kept going back to the beginning, it struck me as odd that, okay let me paint a mental image because I've no idea what these are called.

1. There's a black screen with windows vista or something like that in white, it's very basic looking like how things used to be with computers, maybe microsoft? Anyways it has a long bar at the bottom to tell me its loading and above that and the big graphic above it is that little prompter that says press F2 for so and so and F12 for something else.
2. After I found out someone had stolen my computer I decided to put password protection on my computer before it even started so after the first load screen there is a white screen with grey boxes telling me to insert my passwords.
3. After I put in my passwords there is another black screen with a smaller and more advanced, graphics wise, load bar that is the next thing I usually see before the little icon with my name and the little icon with 'guest.' What's odd, is that I remember there being a little logo above the load bar, or some sort of color besides this little bar. After it seems like it is going to go to my little icon page, it goes black. My mouse pointer pops up and I can move it around, then my mouse pointer disappears and words in white pop up at the top of the screen and disappear too quickly for me to read. Then the process repeats itself, over and over again until I get tired and turn it off.

I've run a diagnostics test, and the hard drive, and everything else you could possibly test is absolutely fine so I haven't the slightest idea what could be wrong with it. Is it a virus? Honestly the only websites I go to are my university's webpage, netscape to check my email, youtube, flickr, and about a dozen craft blogs and that's it. I do have limewire, but having read the warnings about viruses on limewire I don't download anything that has a high, what is it memory, count. There was never any indication that there was anything wrong with my computer before I restarted it, and before that it started and restarted fine.
If anyone knows what might be wrong with it, and/or what I can do to fix it I would be forever thankful.

Thank-you very much,
Bailey

I read this thread when it was first started and avoided answering thinking someone else would simply because my best advice would be take it to someone that can look at it first hand. This could be a virus, but from the description of events you detailed something does not sound right all the way around.
Hate to see a post that doesn't get some reply, so this is the best advice I can give.

i dont think a virus could cause this, maybe its a hardware failure. but at first to make sure its not a windows malfunction; when restarting before vista boots, press F8 and a black screen will appear with a list of options in white. try choosing the "last known good configuration" option and vista will boot. if that does not work do the same again and choose "safe mode" option. "safe mode" disables network and internet, if you want network to be enabled choose "safe mode with networking" option.
If these suggestions dont work then i dont think its a virus, and it could be a hardware malfunction. Usually Hard disc or RAM cause this kind of restarts and sometimes a power failure. I dont know how to help you beyond this point so as ReRun Suggested, take the laptop to repairs or call DELL customer Support, they will be glad to help you.
