CD reader not recognized

Out of nowhere my CD reader (D:/ drive) is not showing in "explore" of my Windows XP pro, there is no D drive. The power to the reader is good and connections are untouched. Is it shot or is there a way to recognize its existence? Also, if I put another in from my parts stas, what do I need to do to fire it up??? Please help.

Does it show in device manager? If so does it have a warning next to that or any other device?
What operating system do you have?
Does the bios recognize the device, do you have a OS disk or other CD that is able to do a DOS boot to see if the drive is still good and having issues with windows.
