The headphone/mic sockets are to fit a header on your mainboard.
Your mainboard manual will tell you if it has this feature or not.
Other than that, if your ok with mods you could attach cables from your sound card to the front sockets.
Not particularly usefull, but at least your question was answered!

If you have an extra 5 inch bay open in your case, get the Live Drive- it's the thing you put in the 5 inch drive that gioves you access to the MIC, Headphone and MIDI jacks, plus has cool extras like Optical In- and Out-puts. I absolutely LOVE this extra feature for the Live Platinum/Audigy.

If there is no header and you don't want to hack, then the sockets are redundant. Sorry.
