sound card problems

I got a new motherboard and cpu with cooler and the company just swapped all the other components over but the motherboard had onboard sound card so I left it well alone. I brought it home and plugged everything back in and put the speakers in the right place but nothing I have looked at everything and even called the company back up but due to having to go back to the company about 5 times in 1 week was taking the pi** so I thought that they would be able to give me advice over the phone but told me that if I was to take it back up to them that they could find out what was wrong. I know that they should have checked to see that everything was working before I left the shop but it was my partner that picked it up. it is about 14 miles their to get to the place. I know I must have been mad to let them near the computer again but the machine is all that I have.

But getting back to the question, I still have no sound. I look in the icon on the taskbar and right click multimedia properties and it says that there is no preferred playback devices and there is no recording devices. so am I presuming that there is no sound card installed or is there a simple solution.

please help

I'm gonna assume you have xp. Under control panel, click on system, hardware, device Manager. Is there a yellow or red question mark/exclamation mark beside anything?

If so, you may need to install drivers for the sound card/onboard.

Also, in the bios, the onboard sound could have been disabled. Reboot your computer and press the 'Delete' key.

Search through the bios for the onboard sound, I can't remember what its listed under. If its disabled, enable it, save and exit.

When it starts windows should detect it and either install or ask fo rthe proper drivers.

Or I could be totally wrong

Good Luck

Sound Card Problems.

Check the manual that came with the mother board so you can check the bios to ensure the sound card is turned on. When I built one of my computers I tried to use the speakers from an older one and they would not work. Not knowing what the specks are on your motherboard I don't know if it requires you to have speakers that have thier own amplifier or not. When I bought amplified speakers it solved my proplem. Hope this helps.

Hi Folks, finally got the blasted sound card to work. What I had to do was to go into find new hardware when it asks if you want the computer to find the driver say no and you can selct it by yourself what you want to find. I clicked onto the soundcard and game port and went through the list of soud cards that you could have I clicked on microsoft as it stated that it was looking for the microsoft Kernal file I was about to install it and it came up with that it was not compatible for my computer but it had asked for it so I applied it. rebooted and put the motherboard cd in the drive and put the sound card driver on its own on the computer and rebooted. I the reinstalled the media rack file after the reboot and then rebooted again, and guess what after all the moaning the I did I finally got sound at last.

So in the future that when anyone gets a ac97 onboard sound we can direct them into the right direction.

thanks for all your help
