Win98SE Can't load SB Live Platinum Drivers???

Weirdness...

Had to reload Win98SE on a PIII 800 machine. Load went well, up till the "Detecting New hardware" phase... I saw in Device manager that my multimedia drivers and sound card drivers and such were not loaded. I put my Sound Blaster driver CD in the drive, and loaded all the goodies- SB drivers, SB Player, the works. Windows goes to restart exactly as I've seen before.

BU tthe sound card still shows up as not installed, and it NEVER seems to load no matter how I try getting Windows to load the drivers. It finds the files OK and SEEMS to load them, but after the necessary reboot it's still dead in the water.

Someone somewhere else suggested re-seating the card in a different expansion bay (apparantly using the slot CLOSEST to the CPU is a bad idea because it has a SLIGHTLY higher power output?), but it was working just fine before I reloaded the OS exactly where it was, so why should that make a difference?

Any ideas???

Thanks a million as always- this place is awesome!

Maybe try going into your 'Device Manager' and deleting your sound card from the listing. Then re-boot. When and if W98 finds the hardware, re-install the software. I had to do this with a friends video card and it worked.

Don't have any other ideas....

Yup... tried this several times. thinking exactly as you do... that Windows would demand I load all the drivers again from scracth- whichg it DOES. But following the reboot, the system still thihnks no sound card is installed. Grrrrrrrrr...

I have just looked on the Creative Labs site and the SoundBlaster Live! drivers are complatible with Windows 98SE SP1 (Service Pack 1). Do you have an install of SP1?

What is 98SE service pack one?
I have updated 98 recently, and all that was available was seperate downloads.
The updates are available on cd though. Perhaps that's what it means.

What and where is Win98SE SP1? I looked on Microsoft and cannot find anywhere SP1 for Windows 98SE. Perhaps you are right Disk_Contented.
