Smile Pci modem problems

Have an Medion FID2030 notebook with internal modem(lucent technologies soft modem AMR)hand me down. Have used it using my broadband connection in the past and recently to check the pc. My father in law wants to use it on his dial up connection. Ive tried plugging into the phone jack, but get a message to go through all the check lists with wires cables etc, ive
checked properties in control panel, and it says device is working properly and enabled.

It is as if the modem doesnt exist.

Ive gone through the help and support which has only confused me but i dont think there is any resource or conflict problems (although admittedly im a bit usless with pcs).

Any help would be appreciated as im half resolved to buy an external or try and fit a new pci modem, but am worried this may not fix the problem and be a waste o time and money.

Please help
