Is it normal for a 40gb to make so much noise?

I haven't used it in a while and now it sounds like its making scratch on the disc.

Hard drives can be noisy. If yours has gotten worse it may be a good idea to back up your data and prepare to replace the drive.

I think I drink about 4 pots of coffee a day because some hard drives sound just like a coffee pot perking and makes me want a cup..they can be loud. sometimes a scandisk/checkdisk and defrag will quiet one down if it was starting to get alot of errors and fragments.

is it clunking or just kind of making a crunchy noise? I have found that when a drive actively clunks parking the actuator it is dying but crunchy sounds usually mean it is just working.....

As suggested, give it a defrag etc .... do this before a chkdisk and if the drive has errors, it will be unable to defrag, telling you you need to check the disk for errors..
