D drive/DVD drive not working!!!

So, my computer melted down a while ago and needed a new hard drive. I brought it to a guy, he fixed it, good as new. EXCEPT now for some reason the D drive doesn't register when there is a disc inserted! I mean, it ejects, it hums and whirrs in such a way that I am strongly convinced it's not specifically a hardware issue. (Also, one DVD worked once- randomly, and it was a Norwegian film... but otherwise nothing reads.)

What steps can a computer illiterati like myself do to fix this thing without bringing it back to the computer guy? btw I use windows XP.....

Does your cdrom drive show up in My Computer?

Does it show in Device Manager?

Have you tried in Safe mode to read?

Have you tried booting off of a CD, XP, Vista, Norton or similar?

If you can boot, then it's a software fault, if you can't boot, it's probably a hardware issue, but seeing as youv'e had a new HDD installed, you may want to check he's connected the cables to your DVD drive also.
