30gb hard drive

I have pentium 3 850 and 2 hard drives 1 western digital 30gb drive. Worked well untill installed xp on the machine, now smart message comes up saying its faulty. Do scan disk etc no errors, after a few days the smart message goes away, then reappears again a few days later, is this just a coincidence or is the hard drive about to go belly up, it is only 2 years old, and really doesn't get a lot of use. Any suggestions before I throw it.

Dont scrap it yet. Go to Western Digital's website and find their diagnostic tool and check the drive with it.
