XP Install wizard won't pop up

After several attempts to install my photo card reader, I finally found and downloaded the correct drivers for XP. Now, just as I am ready to attempt to install it correctly, the installation wizard will not pop up after I plug the reader into the USB port. I've tried unplugging it, then rebooting and plugging it back in--all to no avail.

Before I had the right drivers, I was able to plug it in and get the wizard--at least six times. The last time, after rebooting, it said that the previous session had not been closed correctly (but it was!) which may have been due to an attempt to install new hardware. So....has something happened to the wizard in all my previous attempts to set up the new reader?

Do the drivers have a self installer? i would try double clicking on the file you downloaded. Windows usually likes to know before hand what you are sticking in it's USB ports anyway.

Nope. There's no self-installing file that I can see. I've tried clicking on them all.

just do a driver update from device manager

I'am having also problems with the hardware installer of XP.
When I start the PC and click on "hardware installer" it says it is already busy installing hardware ?????!!!!!!!

That's exactly the reason XP won't install anything else !!

But now, HOW TO STOP THE HARDWARE INSTALLER ??????
