Angry Pulling my hair out with my CD-Rom

I am having a really bad problem with my CD-ROM.

It keeps ejecting seemingly at Random and when I reboot. It also fails to appear in the 'My Computer' Window. I have tried to re-install the device drivers but to no avial. Also I have tried lookingat it in the BIOS but I am not to accustomed to it and fear I may do something I'll regret.

At the start-up screen ( not Windows! ) where the computer displays various details about Hardware, Processer etc. I get the following message:

Sec Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible

F1 to resume
F2 to run setup

My OS is Windows 2000 professional.

If someone has encountered a similar problem or knows something that I can do to fix it it would be a great help.

Thanks

As a starter, check that the cables are securely attached, at both ends.
Test the IDE cable by substitution, if you have a spare.
Swap the power plug with one on another device.
Does the CD now work? or has the device you swapped with gone haywire?
This will eliminate the interconnects, and point allmost certainly to a hardware problem with the CD Drive. (dodgy solder joint on the IDE connector more than likely)
