MotherBoard wont access harddrive

I recently just bought an ECS 648fx-a Motherboard and an Intel 2.4 Ghz 800Mhz FSB,both with hyper thread capability,my problem is this I pulled My old HD which is a 7200rpm Maxtor 40gb and Ram stick which is a PC2100 512mb,tried putting it all in my shiney new case and turned the power on the bios found everything like its spose to,but when it came time to load windows it couldnt access any data that was on the harddrive, tried adjusting everything in the bios that I could think of and still wont access the data thats on the harddrive, the i thought oh well screw it I will just plop in my Windows XP disk and do a fresh install it goes all the way through the loading setup files and then errors out(cant remember the error code),so I then i tried going back to win ME any operating system is better than none at this point but still wont access the harddrive,at this point I think maybe the HardDrive isn't compatable with the new motherboard and processor so I went to the store and bought a Western Digital WD800 80Gb drive and still doing the same thing the Bios in the Motherboard finds the drive but will not access it to read or write,PLEASE if any1 has any ideas as to what is causing this please let me know I'm almost to the point of giving up

I would look hard at the ram - make sure it is compatible and good. Even substituting it with another is a good idea. XP is notoriously fussy about ram. Many times 98 or ME will install and XP will not - all because of ram. Check the ecs site for an updated bios. Do you have the hard drives set properly as master and/or slave? Take a close look at cables.
It is highly unlikely that you can access windows on a hard drive taken from another machine. Your windows and new bios will not jive.
If you slave your old hard drive to a new hard drive - once you get an os installed you should be able to read the data on that drive.
Getting back to the install problem. Look here for more info.

Those Ecs boards are a curse i got one once for my Amd it was hell, so we took it back and got a Gigabyte board and its done me well ever since. I know that my Ecs board was incompatible with a lot of things like ram and modems, so all i can say is in your case i would question the motherboard and consider changing to a Asus or Gigabyte.

As answered above check your master slave cabling and your jumper settings on the HD.
