Windows XP cable unplugged ?!?
I just installed XP for the first time. Everything went just fine but my network doesn't work. XP detected and installed the network card but it tells me "Network cable unplugged" ... In win98 it works great. What can be the problem?

Assuming you have checked the obvious, cable damaged, incorrectly inserted, other computer turned on. If you use a hub, is it powered up? does it have an "uplink" switch that has been moved. (sorry if this sounds Dumb, but it happens).
Failing that, Have a look at this:

Only other thing i can suggest is that your nic card has a duff port.

well, i get the same problem, but its not the cables, iv used 3 difrent ones, and i dont think its a duff port, as thay do work when i connect them to my linksys router (wich would solve my problem, but unfortunatly i can only access the router properly (and change it's setting) when im connected to broadband, which im not, but when i use the cables to conect my coputers directly i get cable unplugged (altough the nic cards are difrent makes, one's linksiys nic and the other is a 3com network card)

Don't forget that you use a crossover cable between two PCs, and a patch cable (straight wired) to a hub.

Well yes thanks and no, (i aint got round to geting hold of any crossover cable. and i would, after concideration like to use my linksis befsr41 as just a hub (im moved and im not in a broadband area at the moment), but now that its not connected to the internet directly ?(im connecting through another commupter and cant eddit the routers settings so its not letting other commputers connect to the internet (i think). now if sombody could give me a workaround i'd be double happy
