Lucent Win Modem
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem. But I do know it's connected with the modem.
For some reason, when I connect to the internet, I will become disconnected (constantly) but my modem or something doesn't realize it. According to the connection icon I am still connected, but every web site I attempt to view I receive the error message "page cannot be found. DNS error"
If I try to re-connect, I receive the message that the modem is in use by another program (this is not true) or the modem is not configured correctly. If that is the case, then how do I manage to connect in the first place.
I checked my Events log, and it is saying that the program using the modem (NetSurf) is hanging. Can that cause a lost connection not to be registered? I don't know enough about the modem to know.
I had this same problem with my last ISP, and have just started using a new ISP. I don't believe the problem is with my server. It must be something on my computer, but what, I don't know.
Any advice is welcome.

Thanks Windows Help.net newsletter
I read a notice in the newsletter about Windows update installing the wrong driver for the Lucent Wind Modem. And the trouble began just about that time.
I have my computer set up to automatically download and install Windows Updates. I guess it may have been an error this time. I will have to change that.
I went to Modemsite (?) and found a link to the updated driver needed for my modem. Downloaded it and installed it. So far, so good. I have been on-line for a solid hour now without losing my connection once.
I know, shoot me for being so stupid, right? I'm glad I discovered the problem myself, and more so for being able to fix it.
Thank you,
Sandilew

Thanks Rita,
I thought the problem was solved with the new driver, but I was wrong. I struggled all last night to keep a connection for just minutes. It was a nightmare.
So, how do you remove the modem, reinstall it, and then reinstall the new driver? I don't even know what the modem looks like. I only "use" the computer. I have no idea what the parts look like.
I just bought the computer in March, and it's still under warranty, but they won't do anything about a modem that passes every test you run on it I feel totally lost here.
I really appreciate your advice. Now I just need to know how to follow through on it.
Thank you,
Sandie

call the brand company of your computer... if its under warranty they can help you...but i think as long you don't open the case.. not sure..
if it fails to help you.. you need:
screw driver
UNPLUG ALL CORDS!!!.. safety precatuion....
open the case.. find which part is your modem.. its should be in PCI port.. white slot..
unscrew the screw attacth to the case.. pull it out genltly don't break it.. then..
put it back in.. screw it up.. plug back all the cords and etc now re-try..

I have a HP with XP installed and a Lucent modem. My internet service provider had me reinstall the modem a few weeks ago like this:
First log off the internet and close all programs associated with the internet. (On your keyboard, hit ctrl, alt, and del keys, to open the Task Manager. If any programs are running-End Task).
Go to Start>Control Panel and open the Phone and Modem Options folder.
Hit the modems tab. Next hit REMOVE. Follow the prompts.
After it uninstalls, hit ADD. The Add New Hardware wizard will open. Let it detect the modem for you.
Hit Next. A little dialog box will open with the Lucent modem - click on that and it installs.
I take it that NetSurf is you ISP? You should call them, since that is comming up as the problem.
Good Luck

A computer less than a year old and with an ongoing problem. Your computer dealer should install a new modem at their expense.
