Actually the 5700 Ultra doesn't exactly kick the 9600Pro's ass. There are quite a few reviews at sites like
[H]ard|OCP that will attest to this.
The 9600XT and 5700Ultras are within $10-20 of each other.
Heres a taste of one:
In Max Payne 2 the BFG Asylum 5700Ultra did show noticeable improvements over the 5600Ultra. It allowed for a more consistent FPS above 30 compared to its predecessor. However, when compared to its main competition the Radeon 9600XT we find that it was not able to surpass it. Overall the 9600XT provided the best average framerates in this game, but the 5700Ultra was very close, certainly competition for the 9600XT in this game. As for realworld gameplay, we would suggest that you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between the two video cards in a "blind taste test".
In Halo the winner is the Radeon 9600XT with the BFG Asylum 5700Ultra once again bringing up a very close second. The BFG Asylum 5700Ultra did provide a good boost up from the 5600Ultra in this game, but the Radeon 9600XT card is still able to edge out the NVIDIA based card for this game. Seeing that the framerates are marginally acceptable at 1024x768 on both cards, Halo is probably going to be best run at 800x600 and should be fine on either cards.
In Tomb Raider: AOD the best mainstream card to play this game with is definitely the Radeon 9600XT as it does provide a higher consistent framerate. However the BFG Asylum 5700Ultra is a great contender and blows the previous 5600Ultra out of the water. Again we think that you would have a hard time telling the two cards apart when playing a game instead of staring at a graph.
For you UT2K3 fans out there, the 5700Ultra has shaped up to be a fine card to deathmatch with. It is basically a dead ringer for 9600XT performance ingame.
Overall in Flight Sim 2004 the Radeon 9600XT and the BFG Asylum 5700Ultra were running close. They both bottomed out around 25FPS as their lowest framerate. However the Radeon 9600XT did enjoy a more consistent stay over 30FPS than the 5700Ultra did. According to our gameplay evaluation the 5700Ultra is actually providing a slightly more consistent higher performance when AA and AF are enabled in this game. The next criteria to look at is image quality. When it comes to AA image quality the Radeon 9600XT beats the 5700Ultra.
Plus: with the 9600XT or 9800XT you get a full copy of Half-Life 2
