External laptop keyboard

I have an ageing IBM laptop that I want to add an external keyboard to, as the built-in one is getting erratic. However, when I plug it in, I get a message that the resdources are already in use and it won't function correctly. I've tried disabling and uninstalling the built-in one but it's re-detected and re-installed on reboot. How do I get round this and just use the external one?
