Modem Takes minutes to connect

When connecting to my ISP the modem starts the handshake process normal, but during the handshake there is a point where the "screeching" stops then starts right away and continues for about a minute all the while says it's Dialing. Once the "screeching" does stop the Dialing goes to a Verifying Username & Password. I have unselected Log Onto Network, checked the drivers from the vendor, reinstalled Dial-up Networking, changed Com ports the modem is installed on, and changed the connect speed the modem connects at. I am using Windows 98.

might be a compression issue, have you tried calling your ISP to find out if your settings are correct?

you could also be having a problem with noise (static) on the phone line. try a different phone line and check with your phone co. to see if that is happening.

I changed the modem from a v92 to a v90 and it seems to be working now.
