installing two hard drives

i am trying to install IDE hard drives. i have a old one in the primary master. but when i try the second new one in the primary slave, second master and slave, it doesn't work... is there any setting required?

What is the spec for you new Hard Drive as well as your computer ? Older computer do not recognise the newer large drive.

Besides the fact that I didnt really understand which drive you tried as master and which you tried as slave and so forth .. you didnt really tell us anything about your problem... like.. detects drives but wont boot.. or drives cant be detected... or one drive works other doest.....I can offer little other than make sure you have jumpers on drives set so they are not conflicting.. or properly in general ..

does bios detect the drives?, any boot failiur messages??
