IDE Channel Recommendations

In setting up a new system and working with two IDE channels, two hard drives and two DVD drives, would it be best to put both my DVD-ROM and DVD burner on the same IDE channel? If so, which should be the master and which should be the slave?

My other option would be to put a hard drive and a DVD drive on each IDE channel. Would this scenario be better than the first one? Then again, which should be the master and which should be the slave?
