73C is too high. Temperatures vary depending on what you have and what you're doing, but my numbers right now are (not doing anything special - just surfing the internet):

Motherboard = 31C (88F)
CPU = 36C (97F)

That's common for a P4 when not stressing.

For 73C, you might try removing the computer's cover and running an external fan. If the CPU temp drops by 10 deg. C or so, then the case needs either additional or more powerful fans. Also, make sure the computer's vents are open, there are no wires and cables obstructing any of the fan's airflow, the computer is not located in an enclosed cubicle, and there is no dust built up inside the computer and on any fans or heatsinks.

If the CPU temp drops only a few degrees with an external fan, then it may need a more efficient heatsink/fan combo, and possibly different thermal compound.

If you have an Intel board, you might be interested in a free monitor from Intel that will give you temps and other information about your board.

Aida32 is even better. It's also free.

Thanks for the replies

After reading further i decided to check the temp in the bios
it gives me readings of MB = 30 deg
CPU = 42 deg

My other reading came from Motherboard monitor
so one must be wrong guess it must be MBM

I have been suffering from random reboots and crashes thats why i was checking the temp thought it may be the problem as i think the fan is very loud
therfore may need replacing
