Question Adsl with W98 and Zone Alarm

I have installed ADSL from Tiscali on my PC with W98SE and Zone
Alarm Firewall but I often cannot get connected.
The modem is USB ADSL LAN Adapter from SAGEM.

I have queried with the provider [Tiscali] and he has come up with the story.
"Zone Alarm Firewall often causes loopback and other problems .... You should use another."
I asked him why this was not in the notes with the installation. But he did not answer!!!
I told him I had removed the firewall and still had the problem of
connecting. He then asked me about my OS and came with another story.
"W98SE is an old OS and cannot deal with the protocol and cannot get an IP address.... You should change to w2000 or higher"
Again I asked why this was not in the installation notes and why do they provide SW and drivers for W98 and W98SE.
"We are not allowed to exclude W98 or advise against it or we would be prosecuted by Microsoft"
Is this true???
I asked if I could put in a fixed IP but he said it has to ask for one at each connection.
He said that a remedy if it does not connect use "winipcfg /all" to release the IP address and it will re-search.

Can you confirm any of this.
Is it bad driver and SW ??
Is Zone Alarm not compatible ??
Is W98 not able to handle ADSL protocol??

You are getting the run around by your ISP. That bull $hit, they don't know what is going on and they pass the buck to you ...If it was Windows 98 Golden edition then I would say may be it could be your USB connector but SE does not have that issue neither does ZA. Keep you firewall on all the time before you get forced to re-install (due to hack and virus). IF you are planning to keep your OS then it would be time to change ISP.

cheers

Thanks for the replies.
It confirms what i suspected that indeed they are giving me the run around.
In fact they have insufficient Ip address and pinching back through priority tricks.
No I keep the Win98SE OS and firewall.
Instead i intend to get a router and not allow them to pinch back the IP.
I understand that there are similar problems with Wanadoo and other providers.
As in the past if there is good provider they soon become oversubscribed and give a bad performance.

If you are having problems getting IP address it does help to release and renew using "winipcfg /all"

tiscali are a bag of sh**e stay away from them...im stuck with them till next january as they say i signed up for a year.

couldnt get on the net without trying to get connected for 40 mins some times, and their customer service is a joke. one of their technical jokers told me the reason i couldnt get connected was because "i have a scanner and a printer connected to my pc"

when i asked for the phone number of their head office, i was told it didnt have one,so... a major telecom company isnt on the phone,i think they may be telling porkies there.

have nothing to with tiscali, cant wait until jan 9th 2005 when my years contract is up!!!!

Have you got Telewest up your way?

I am running Blueyonder Cable without a hitch in the last 2 years.

In fact they have just upgraded everybody by 50% for nowt, so I am now running 1.5 Mb. The 512 kb got upgraded to 768 kb.

Hi Raddy,
I'm also stuck with them for now.

In the meantime you can do two things.

To get a connection don't pull the USB or reinstall:
A. run the command "winipcfg /all"

B. Select your adsl connection adapter
C. Click on "release"
D. Click on "renew"

To maintain your connection:
Get rid of your USB adaptor and replace it with a router

Much success,

Jim
