I recently received a gmail account from Google. Very impressive. 1 gig of storage and few advertisements not to mention being totally free.
It looks as though Google will revolutionize email. You will never have to delete mail again with that kind of space.
Other providers will have to follow suit if they want our business. Yahoo has upped storage for random users now and other less known services have went has high as 2 gigs.
Historically, web based email services offering large,free storage have folded and closed their doors but this is not a danger with Google.
Gmail is still in beta and not being offered to everyone. But keep your eyes open! I'm sure it will not be long till everyone can get a free account.

hey i am using gmail for last 3 months.its great!!..the email sending and receiving r very fast...

In order to get G-mail you have to be invited to it by an existing customer.

So if your friend had it he/she could send you an invite and then you could sign up.

Thats how you get it.

Or how i got it.
