A strange internet problem

Hi there,

I'm depserate for help and am running out of ideas. Basically my internet works fine for about 20 minutes in which time I can surf happily. Then all of a sudden it stops working. However my FTP connection still works as does Kazaa and programs like that.I've even had my service provider out twice to test the line. The only way I can use the internet again is to restart.

I have tried looking for a virus with Spybot, Adware and Avast anti virus without any luck and also running winsockfix.exe to reset connection/ports etc.

Please, any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Using stand alone FTP transfer packages and Kazaa implies you're shuttling .mp3-s around. Are you running Winamp 5 in the foreground with a slew of plugins engaged AND buffer a long playlist into memory while you're running the browser and some other applications? If your OS=XP and the cpu/mem is less than around 2GHz/512MB DDR then it's not surprising that the machine is seizing up. An old AMD K6-2 500MHz/256MB DIMM machine running Win98 that I once had used to seize up regularly when I tried to do the same ...

No nothing like that. I use Kazaa occasionaly and have a 2.2Ghz Machinewith a gig of RAM so its not an issue of overworking it.

Has anybody heard of a particular virus or spyware that close down the internet port or something like that?

If you have Windows XP with SP2 then you may want to read this article, it could very well be related:

Thanks for your reply but I solved the problem by formating and reinstalling everything. A bit drastic but it worked.
