Lets talk browsers

I've been fooling with browsers a lot lately. I rarely use IE but have used mostly Opera and Mozilla. I can hardly wait for the final Opera 7. The last couple of days I installed Crazy and Avant - both use the IE engine. Each is unique. I think Crazy is better. I love the tabs and the speed in both is great.

I have 6 browsers on my desktop: AOL, IE, MSN (although I've just dropped my trial subscription to MSN8), Netscape, Mozilla and Opera (and I use all of them).

I'm curious. I've seen several polls identical to this one in other forums and all seem to ignore AOL. Why is that? Is it just that AOL is so big that alot of people think of it as "the establishment" and its "not cool" to be part of "the establishment"? The same people who sneer at AOL also seem to be hostile to Microsoft (although, hostility to Microsoft is understandable for a variety of reasons).

I'm just curious why, if AOL really has 35 million subscribers, we see so few references to it.

That Opera is a good browser except for one thing. The bookmarks occasionally vanish.. and I mean vanish.. no traces.
I cant imagine why it doesnt have a system folder it installs or a profile folder in app data like Mozilla.
If they haven't changed it in 7, I wont install/use it.
To me my bookmarks are the most important data on the machine right up there with the address book.
Mozilla rules when it comes to this...and everything else for that matter.

AOL is rammed down your throat at every turn... no doubt peoples minds subconsciously block the thing.
Have you tried using it?

AOL has been my default browser for over a year and its the only browser I have that has never given me any trouble.

I don't watch television so I don't know what their advertising is like, but I don't have the impression that AOL is being "rammed down anyone's throat". I know that their CDs are everywhere, which only impies to me that internet accessability is quick, easy and available to anyone. (I didn't say cheap although I'm sure the 1000 free hours is attractive to many).

I just downloaded Avant. I like the look, but I've got some questions for the guys that said they have been using it.

What's the relationship between IE and Avant? When I change the home page in Avant, it makes the same change in IE. When I change IE's home page back to what I had, it changes Avants home page.

I like to have different home pages on all of my browsers. What's going on here?

They are closely affiliated - avant uses the IE engine so to speak. Avant is just an improved IE. IE favorites and internet options are also shared. I cannot help you bout the home page thing cause I never use IE. I will test mine next time I'm in that os.

I've only been playing with this for a few minutes but I think I like it. My first impression is that its more like Opera than IE.

You could try "my IE", another front end for explorer with much improved functionality.

A few years ago i started a project called 2A, its my VB.6/.NET designed Explorer which is based on Microsoft technologys

i started on Version 1.00 which was very basic compared to ie.5 which was out at the time but as time has gone on ive created an Explorer which is alot faster and better equipped that ie6 and most of the other Explorers. I have created a number of different versions for certains OS's including a version for OSx
and mainly Windows XP but versions are there for 95,98,ME,2000 and NT

within the next few months my site will be up
www.2aexplorer.com which will host this quite amazing explorer keep an eye out for it.

And another thing the browser is full skinable with what ever u want cool ay

I look forward to seeing your site. I used IE 5.5 . I found it much better than 6. Unfortunately, software I had was not stable in 5.5 and I had to upgrade.
