Taking Internet Explorer out of Commission

I've installed and am using Mozilla FoxFire as my browser, but I am still getting some ware that is able to open itself MS Internet Explorer.
I have read that completely deleting Internet Explorer can have bad reprecussions; however, is there some way I can basically take Internet Explorer out of commission so I don't have to see it, let alone close it when it pops up?
(I have Norton Internet Security, Ad-Aware and SpyBot currently on my system).

Sure there is weedeebee

If your using Windows XP, just click on 'Set Program Access And Defaults' in the start menu. Now click on 'Custom' and remove the tick from the Internet Explorer box
