problems with the internet speed...

ey ppl...

i downloaded a skin for msn messenger 7 a coupla days ago and it made my msn a lot slower...and at the same time it effected my internet speed. Now the speed slows down every 30 minutes or something and then accelerates to its normal speed...i scanned my computer with norton antivirus and found that my computer was infected with viruses, about 16 of them but they got deleted after the scan was complete...everythins workin fine now except the speed, it keeps on slowing down and then goes back to normal. Does anybody know what might be causing this?

Norton does not find adaware/spyware, which probably got installed when you downloaded your new skin. Believe it or not, Microsoft AntiSpyware is pretty good (because Microsoft didn't create it). I would download it, update the defs and run a full system scan. Just be careful when removing, because it will even identify some valid programs as spyware (such as VNC) because they do pose security risks.

thanx a lot man...scanned my computer with AntiSpyware and found some serious threats on my pc...had ad aware and spybot but they didnt find anythin like that...aight...this software is great BUT it turns out that the problem didnt get fixed...like when im downloadin somethin or listening to live stream on winamp...as the speed slows down, the stream stops and the downloading speed reaches zero for a brief period...likewise i get disconnected from msn but then it reconnects after a short interval...i took a look at the network connections and everything seems to be workin fine from the time the connection reaches my computer...but still the downloading speed slows down in a mysterious way....

Do you have firewall turned on? if so, I would check your log (c:\windows\pfirewall.log in XP) for any suspicious activity.

Also, when you're active on the Internet, open up a command prompt and type "netstat -e". This will give you ethernet statistics and tell you if you're getting any errors or unknown protocols. You'll probably have some, but it should be fairly low (100-200 b). netstat by itself will show you active sessions along with the protocol and port.

I would also do some performance monitoring and a bandwidth test 1) while doing nothing to get a baseline and 2) while doing a download. You can find a bandwidth test by just searching on google.
