HELP! Internet Explorer not working.

I been having this problem for almost three months now.

When I start up Internet Explorer, try to go to a site or have a pop up, I will always see this page:

ADSRESSres://C:\WINDOWS\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://www.yahoo.com)

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

I have tried everything, virus scans, following the given instructions, spyware removal/ scans, reseting to default and almost every update or fix for internet explorer I can find. Nothing seems to work.

The weird thing is, if I open a folder and type a website say www.yahoo.com, it WORKS. I can surf the internet and even go to other websites.

BUT no pop ups works and if I open a New Window the problem is there. It is like the problem does not affect the folder opened window only.

I am using a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 on Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2.

The problem does not seems to be hardware based, in fact I remember I was viewing a site when I realise that I cannot go to the next page.

Please help. I need the internet for school work, and have been using Netscape, which is not very compateble with my school's website. Also I cannot install Netscape 8.0, each time I try it pops up a installer error saying my installer has an invalid configuration. Using Netscape 7.2 is starting to pose problems so I need to fix this problem fast!

I will appreciate if anyone has a way to fix this problem/s.

Whenever I get this it's almost always an IP address problem. Try renewing your ip address.
1. Click the Start menu button on the Windows taskbar.
2. Click Run... on this menu.
3. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.
4. Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).
5. If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.
6. Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).

See it this doesn't fix your problem.

What kind of Internet connection are you using?
You mentioned you looked for updates and fixes for IE. Does that mean you tried to repair IE or re-install IE?
I've had mine do this to me but not near the frequency your having. If you haven't tried to repair or re-install IE I would try it.
Also, have you installed anything since this started like a firewall?
Just out of curiousity, try going online and while at the first site click start\run and renew your IP address while online and see if you can get to the next site.

Reply to U.S. Patriot

I am using 512KB broadband

About the fixers and updates. I tried to get some of those patches from Microsoft website. They are suppose to address some problems, but not mine.

Also I CANT uninstall Internet Explorer. I does not appear on the add/remove programs list. And yes I have reinstall Internet explorer a few different times. I even just installed a Yahoo version, hope that it works but it made no difference.

All the firewall, antivirus, internet protection, came along with the computer, which worked OK for two months before this problem starts.

And I did renewal of the IP address while online it have no effect.

If you have any ideas post them and thanks for trying to solve my problem.

You could try Firefox, it works differently than IE as it's not integrated with Windows. At least you might be able to do your work and if it won't work either it might point us in the direction of your problem. It's also more secure than IE.

The only thing I can think of for you to try is doing a system restore, and a registry scan.
Make sure your Internet modem and drivers for your modem is working properly,
you also might check too see if your having any software conflicts.
The only other thing I can think of is to reformat your system. But I would call my Internet Provider first and explain your problem and see if there is a connection problem of some sort. My cable tech people are pretty good and if the tech knows what's wrong with my system they tell me.
But you do have one weird problem going on.
You might also want to post this problem in the windows xp section if you haven't already.
Good luck

Same Problem Fixed

Hi,

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. The fault was with the motherboard,it has VIA chipset which is unable to supply enough power for the USB Sagem F@st 800 modem. I've updated the motherboard drivers and all is now fine.
