No Internet on New Computer
I can't seem to get the internet to work on my home computer. Our setup is a modem to a router and then to two computers. The Mac works fine but I can't seem to get my new PC to work at all with the internet. WTF. I have tried playing around with all sorts of things and can't find anything at all that works. Please help me.

Re: No Internet
1. Make sure that your computer has an IP address. Also check to see if your computer obtains an IP by DHCP, not manually. Most routers use DHCP to automatically set IP's on each computer.
2. Try the PC connected directly to the modem, and the PC in the router w/o your Mac.

IP Address
To check your computer's IP address in Windows XP, run "cmd", then type in "ipconfig". In Windows 95/ME, run "winipcfg". Be sure that info for your ethernet device is selected. It should list a valid IP, eg 192.168.1.100. If it's 0.0.0.0, then no IP is set.
To check that DHCP is enabled on your computer in XP, go to network connections and open the properties for the adapter. Click on properties for TCP/IP. Be sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are checked. In Windows 95, go to control panel, Network, then TCP/IP properties for your device. It should be set to "Obtain an IP automatically". If there is no TCP/IP protocol device installed for the device, then install it, and restart your computer.

Hmmm....
1. Can you connect to the Internet at ALL (using a diff. browser)?
2. Make sure that Internet Explorer has "autodetect" settings (Tools, Options, Connections, LAN Settings) and that you don't connect thru a Proxy server.
3. Try to ping localhost (run, cmd or command, "ping localhost"). It should return avg time 0ms. Then, ping an external server (eg google.com). If you get a response, then your Internet connection is fine, and you need to reconfigure your network settings.

1. I don't know with a different browser because I dont have any other ones.
2. auto detect is selected
3. I can ping local host and get 0ms for all readings. I can not get google thought. Whenever I try anything but local host I get request timed out.
What next?

Ethernet Card
Try checking the Device Manager for any problems with your card. If you have more than one ethernet card, disable one of them.
Is the computer brand new or used? If it's used, then it might be a hardware issue.
If you have any extra ethernet cards, try it in your computer, or try the ethernet card form your computer in another one.
Try to ping your router (usu. 192.168.1.1) or your Mac (it should respond) by its intranet address. If there is no luck, then it's likely a physical problem (bad cable, ethernet card).
In this case, I would reinstall the driver for the ethernet card. Try to run the network troubleshooter (if you didn't already). Run the Internet Connection Wizard, too.
Good Luck

The ethernet port is on my motherboard and it is all brand new. I tried pinging my router and the other computer. And had nothing recieved. The cable works fine, I could use it on the mac no problems. I am going to try and format my entire hard drive and reload windows. Any idea how to do this?

Since the computer is brand new, I wouldn't format the drive yet.
Did you try to "repair" it under network connections?
Near the ethernet jack on your computer, there should be an indicator light. If it's green (active), then you have a connection. If no light shows up, then it's a problem with your ethernet connecter, and you should get it fixed under your computer's warranty.

My connection is cable, that has nothing to do with it though. When you repair the connection it eror's and does nothing. At the connection port there are two lights. One of them is always on and the other blinks when starting up. The one I asume means a connection is present and the other indicates activity.
Anyway I think I need to reload everything. I tried Firefox and no go. Looks to be the end for me. Still open to suggestions.

Never mind. I reinstalled windows and then the ethernet drivers right away. Everything worked... For just a little fucking while. Then after downloading a few drivers the computer started to flash then turn to a blue screen with a lot of writing on it for a half second and then restart. I was able to control it the first few times. Then it would auto matically do start doing it. Soon I was in a cycle of the thing just restarting over and over. I shut the thing down and now the OS will not even fucking load up. It goes through the screens of the crap, and then instead of loading windows my screen goes black. Why is this happening to me two week beore I have to leave for college? Any new ideas? For some reason I have never been able to run off the CD for some reason. Tell me exactly how I should do it.
Thank you all so much.
