WPA2-PSK(Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key)
WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK
WPA-802.1x
WPA2-802.1x

WEP ("Wired Equivalent Privacy", sometimes incorrectly termed "Wireless Encryption Protocol") has become obsolete, or at least obsolescent. WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is far more secure. WPA2 is somewhat (slightly?) more system resource intensive than WPA. More info here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb878054.aspx

I use WPA2-PSK. Good luck.

[EDIT] The range of wireless routers can be quite good, depending on location and materials used in building structures. I have a cheap ($30) Belkin and can pick up two wireless networks besides my own. One of them is unsecured. If I knew which of my neighbors it is, I'd offer to secure their network. I have two neighbors about 100 feet away, one of whom I know has no computer. And there are 4 more houses about 200 feet away. My router is in our second-floor computer room in our wood-frame house, to give you some idea of the range possible. Anyway, WPA2-PSK is easy to set up and reasonably secure.

WPA can be cracked remotely, if memory seves. Get the latest, and yes, all devices have to support the protocol or they don't communicate.

Out of curiosity, I did a little checking up on this issue. Seems that it is not uncommon for folks to have wireless networking problems with Vista. Sooo... The following may be of some use, if not to the OP, then to anyone running Vista.

1) What operating system are you on? Vista? If so look here:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...376c21033.mspx

You can find other related pages by searching "vista wireless problem" or similar. Like this page, for instance:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic87081.html

2) First step is to get everything working unsecured. To state the obvious, first of all you must know the network setup works before setting passwords and encryption. Have you done that? (A related question: If it does NOT work unsecured, are you certain you have the correct adapter, "N" or "G"?)

3) I have read a number of threads on this. Some folks running Vista claim that nothing works except: Using WEP encryption rather than WPA, or reverting to Windows XP. Dunno, just putting that out there.

One can only hope that the impending release of SP1 for Vista will resolve most wireless networking problems. Good luck.

[EDIT] One other thing. In my case, (running XP), I had to bridge the modem to get the network up.
