HTML in website header

Hello
Have an HTML code for a header... it consists of a banner across the top and a navigation list down the left hand side.

Problem is:
the list down the left hand side, is on the left hand side, but it always moves the main page area down and so the nav strip stays above and pushed the main page area down below it and not along side it (as it should be).

what bit of the HTML dictates the nav to sit DOWN the left side?
have copied it below for info
thanks

Sorted Sorted Sorted..... ANSWER:
this is the very ending of the code (we can influence) and we changed the middle bit...

From This:
Quote:
</tr>
</table>

<tr>
<td>bar</td>
<td>

<!-- End of your Header -->
<!-- Shop starts here -->

To This:
Quote:
</tr>
</table>

<td width="625" align="center" valign="top">

<!-- End of your Header -->
<!-- Shop starts here -->

It all sits as should now, (still not quite sure why.. but we only work on logic and patterns rather than in depth code knowledge, ah bless).
Anyway perhaps this little saga, now concluded with feedback, will help someone else in future times.
