Unhappy No Internet on One LAN Computer

I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops on a LAN through a D-Link 604 router and have lost connectivity to the internet on one of the desktops. All are running XP Pro and interestingly enough on the one that I can't get through to the internet to regular sites I can access secured sites https://. On that machine I can access e-mail as well as all the others. I can also access the internet on the other three computers. This problem sems to have started when I hooked up the last laptop to the LAN a week ago.
300mg+ memory on the problem machine, 1200 AMD Duron cpu, 1394 card, d-link ethernet card all updated as well as router firmware.
Can't download new version of IE6 as I can't access MS site and whenever I try that on another machine I get a notice indicating that I have an more current version and the download stops. Am at my wit's end. Can anyone suggest something?

Here are few things you could try.

Open IE, go to Tools / Internet Options / Advance / Click on Restore Default.

-> then go to Security Tab , click on "Default Level"......Then click on Privacy Tab , Click on Sites.... and add the following link to the "allow List"

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com
http://www.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate

and finally, go to My computer / C Drive / Windows / system32 / Drivers / ETC / hosts file (open the hosts file with note pad) and delete and thing other the default text.

Here is a sample of default text:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Hey Snowmonkey: I lost you in the line where you say after "open hosts file" which I have and you go on to say "delete and thing other the default text". Do you mean "delete any thing other than the default text"? For instance I have a last line that reads "127.0.0.1 localhost" on each of my machines. Also on the beginning instruction "Open IE, go to Tools / Internet Options / Advance / Click on Restore Default" I cannot access the default box, only Custom is highlighted and Default shaded.
Understand the remainder of instructions and thanks. Please advise further thoughts if you will.
