MySpace seems to be a growing problem, its alot easier to block the usage of it a a corporate level, which we had to do.

I basically told my firewall to look for all URLs that contained the words "myspace" in it, and have it reject it.

I got a alot of hate mail from my users.. but I told them that they should not be using MySpace on company time.

Some personal firewalls may be able to do this, though I am not sure which ones, but one might try simply putting this as a URL block:

*.myspace.com

That may work instead of trying to figure out all their IPs, and hostnames.

Now this only works for hostnames... but as soon as I figure out what ranges of IPS they use I am going to create IP Routes on my internal internet router to route back back to 127.0.0.1.

But for right now its working... though my rule in the firewall I have does prevent them from doing a ping, nslookup, etc.. again because its looking for any content that contains myspace in it.

Just for future reference - people don't just grab IP addresses out of a huge hat all willy-nilly, they are assigned to entities by authorities. You can use whois queries to identify domain IP ranges and manager records. Just performed a lookup a sec ago with the following results:

Myspace.com (MYSPA)
Myspace.com (AS33739) MYSPACE 33739
Myspace.com Q0316-67-134-143-0 (NET-67-134-143-0-1) 67.134.143.0 - 67.134.143.255
Myspace.com MYSPA-1 (NET-204-16-32-0-1) 204.16.32.0 - 204.16.35.255
Myspace.com MYSPA-2 (NET-216-178-32-0-1) 216.178.32.0 - 216.178.47.255

*They've gobbled up some serious internet real estate, guess they're popular people =) Anyways, to configure routers/firewalls filter out those ranges and by the looks of it you'll be myspace free for a long long time (i seriously doubt they'll use up their 4000+ ips anytime soon)

I have found that a three pronged approach works.

by the way, Boxclaw made a slight error in his first post (the first one in this thread). . he gave the wrong location for the hosts file in Win 98. .
in Win98 it's in either the Windows folder, or in the Windows\system or Windows\system32 folder. . it isn't in the place he mentioned (he gave the same location as where it is in XP, and I know that's wrong, cause I've done it a lot on both, but it's been a while since I did it on 98, so I can't remember exactly where it is. .

anyway, that said. .

I use the hosts file extensively, but I have a couple of other tools I use as well (both of which keep the kid from ever finding the hosts file, just in case he ever does figure out that that is where the site (and all the porn sites I can block as well) is being blocked). .

Step one is (if you have Windows XP or Windows 2000), make YOUR (the parents') windows account (login, screenname, etc) an Administrative one (this right here gives you the right to do anything on the PC, almost, including change other screennames (and change or delete or setup their passwords for their login). .

once you have set your account as the Administrator account (it probably was one to begin with, but you need to make it the ONLY admin account, and make your kids' account a 'restricted" one), then you need to downgrade theirs to a restricted account.

You can do both of the above in "Start > Control Panel > Users", and then click "change a user account", or "create a user account", (if you are all using the same account, you need two different accounts, so you have to create another one. . so there will be two accounts, one for you (the administrator(s)). . and one for your child or maybe one for each of your children, but make sure that they are ALL restricted accounts and yours is the only administrator account (and set up a password, and don't just write it down anywhere where they might find it). . this is crucial. .

so, step one, TAKE control of the computer. . it's YOUR computer, the kids didn't pay for it, YOU did. . so be in charge, and YOU decide what programs are installed and which aren't (another benefit of being the admin. . with a restricted account they can't install or uninstall programs. . but with an admin account you can, so you are in control). .

Step two. . a very extensive and well considered hosts file. . I have been assembling and adding to my extensive hosts file for many months now. . and it includes lots of proxy sites (those are sites that kids can go to to tunnel through the filters to Myspace and other sites).

If you want this file, I can email you a copy and give you instructions on how to put it in your PC as your hosts file. . and it will block a LOT of stuff (including Myspace). .

Anyway, I have run short of time, will finish this later. .

email me if you have any questions at all and/or need any help at all. .

Not True

You are both right and wrong... when service pack 2 was release there is a flaw in the Admin <--> Limited account promissions.... it allows limited users to install somethings.. includeing but not limited to: Spyware, Malware, Viruses, and even some games(as long as they do not need to install DirectX).... thats asuming that you have windows xp HOME, not PRO. PRO is a differant story.... see as how you the abilty to "lockdown" PRO, you dont have that problem... and as far as the user names keeping limited users from editing/changeing/replaceing the host file that aslong as they get to it... microsoft did not have the forsight enough to count that as a system wide change...

Myspace has already 3000+ ip addresses... they are fixin to expand to more.... and they are about to upgrade to the IPv6 platform for inturnal addressing.. so then the only way to block them turly is to have a IPv6/IPv4 router.... or use hostnames

CTMAMI2 --> you can use my host file... or you can use firewall software that can block proxy servers, and proxy redirects

Can you email your host file to me, please? I emailed you, but I wasn't sure if you received it.

Many thanks,

Pimp MySpace

Hi
I have tried to 'ping' this site and add it to the list of sites I want to block but it isn't working. Any suggestions/help would be brilliant. Thanks

what isn't working? Pinging it?

I pinged it and it says the ip address is: 72.5.175.90

Put that in the hosts file as:

127.0.0.1 72.5.175.90
127.0.0.1 dpweb.vendaregroup.com
127.0.0.1 www.vendaregroup.com
127.0.0.1 vendaregroup.com

see if that works (put it in and then type in the site's url and see if you can get there or not).

If I were you (and I had kids using the PC, and wanted to keep them from using MySpace), I'd uninstall it [Firefox] and make sure their user account is a limited account so they can't install it again (someone said this doesn't work with XP Home, but I'm not convinced - I know it works w/ XP Pro, and I think it does with Home as well) - and that you (the parent/s) have the only admin account and its passworded out).

If it doesn't work (if it doesn't keep them from installing Firefox again), then you can put some program on the computer to prevent them from installing programs without authorization. Another thing you can do is block (in the hosts file) all the typical sites one can download Firefox from (including Mozilla.com).

This isn't ideal, I realize, because Firefox is typically much more secure than IE, but if you have enough protection otherwise on your PC (good updated antivirus and antispyware programs and a good firewall, along w/ all the security updates from Microsoft's website for your operating system), then you should be ok.

I also have a rather exhaustive hosts file I've built, for anyone that wants a copy.

my email address is: s p r e c t a t o r @ y a h o o . c o m (take out the spaces)
