reverse the process (or you can just put in a # in front of the line (to comment it out)).

Thanks for your advice. I still can't block the 'uk.myspace' totally because the ping request can not find the host but I have at least managed to make life difficult for my kids.
One big problem I see with 'MySpace' is not what my kids post about themselves, but personal details that their friends post about them including pics. Anyone who wanted to hit on my 15 year old daughter would work out who she is and where she lives with no problem because her friends don't take care with the comments they leave.
I wish I was better with computers but grateful for your help.

This was a tricky one to block, but . .

I believe I found a way. This is a workaround.

It doesn't keep the page from coming up, but the kid can't use it to get to MySpace or anywhere else if you do the following:

I decided I'd see if putting it in the restricted zone in the "Security" tab of the Internet Explorer Properties page would fix it, and it seemed to.

I put the whole thing in (the base URL, "http://75.126.77.27" (without the quotes), and then, although it did get to the page, it then said "you have javascript disabled, please enable it to use the proxy."

So if it doesn't work without javascript working, then you just put that site in the "restricted zone" in IE properties, and make sure that zone has zero permissions to do anything, least of all run javascripts and active X controls (something programs like SpywareBlaster disable (for this very reason) anyway. The reason SpywareBlaster disables them and puts all kind of bad (virus/spyware) sites in that zone is that so if your browser is secretly hijacked and sent to one of these bad sites, they can't download viruses to your PC using javascripts and active X controls (basically, executable programs, which easily can be viruses, if they are from the wrong people).

To get to the Security tab of the IE Properties page, click (along the top of your Internet Explorer browser) "Tools", then "Internet Options", then click the "Security" tab (2nd from left, usually), and then click the red "Restricted Sites" icon, and then click "Sites" button just below the red thing, and then type in the URL of the site and click "Add" and the "OK"

Now you just have to keep the kid from going in and enabling JavaScript. I would urge you to use Doug Knox's XP Security console for this (to take away the kids' or employees' abilities to mess with the javascript controls):

here's the link to Doug's free downloadable program, which gives a parent a lot of extra power if you're using XP or (I believe it works on Windows 2000 as well):

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_securityconsole.htm

again. . feel free to email me with any questions/comments you may have.

address is spectator <-- (add an R after the P) @yahoo.com [ I intentionally did it this way so some robotic program won't scan this page, find my email address, and then send me millions more offers of cheap rolexes every day, or whatever. . the actual name to put before the @ symbol is sprectator (the word spectator with an R stuck in after the S and before the P), and then just @yahoo.com

Now if I can just block uk.myspace.com site then I will have it covered. I can't ping this site either it just comes back saying 'the ping request can not find the host'. Maybe I am doing something wrong with when I try to ping
If anyone could let me have the IP I would be really grateful.
Thanks you sooooooooooooooo much.

by the way, Boxclaw made a slight error in his first post (the first one in this thread). . he gave the wrong location for the hosts file in Win 98. .
in Win98 it's in either the Windows folder, or in the Windows\system or Windows\system32 folder. . it isn't in the place he mentioned (he gave the same location as where it is in XP, and I know that's wrong, cause I've done it a lot on both, but it's been a while since I did it on 98, so I can't remember exactly where it is. .

anyway, that said. .

I use the hosts file extensively, but I have a couple of other tools I use as well (both of which keep the kid from ever finding the hosts file, just in case he ever does figure out that that is where the site (and all the porn sites I can block as well) is being blocked). .

Step one is (if you have Windows XP or Windows 2000), make YOUR (the parents') windows account (login, screenname, etc) an Administrative one (this right here gives you the right to do anything on the PC, almost, including change other screennames (and change or delete or setup their passwords for their login). .

once you have set your account as the Administrator account (it probably was one to begin with, but you need to make it the ONLY admin account, and make your kids' account a 'restricted" one), then you need to downgrade theirs to a restricted account.

You can do both of the above in "Start > Control Panel > Users", and then click "change a user account", or "create a user account", (if you are all using the same account, you need two different accounts, so you have to create another one. . so there will be two accounts, one for you (the administrator(s)). . and one for your child or maybe one for each of your children, but make sure that they are ALL restricted accounts and yours is the only administrator account (and set up a password, and don't just write it down anywhere where they might find it). . this is crucial. .

so, step one, TAKE control of the computer. . it's YOUR computer, the kids didn't pay for it, YOU did. . so be in charge, and YOU decide what programs are installed and which aren't (another benefit of being the admin. . with a restricted account they can't install or uninstall programs. . but with an admin account you can, so you are in control). .

Step two. . a very extensive and well considered hosts file. . I have been assembling and adding to my extensive hosts file for many months now. . and it includes lots of proxy sites (those are sites that kids can go to to tunnel through the filters to Myspace and other sites).

If you want this file, I can email you a copy and give you instructions on how to put it in your PC as your hosts file. . and it will block a LOT of stuff (including Myspace). .

Anyway, I have run short of time, will finish this later. .

email me if you have any questions at all and/or need any help at all. .

Help!

I caught my kids using bunch of proxies to get around these techniques. Is there anything we can do about those?

Again, there is more than one way to deal with this.

One of the ways is by putting all the proxy sites into the hosts file (something I keep up with pretty well, although there are always more new ones every week and every day). . but then I go and find them and add them to my hosts file. It's an arms race, but it can be done.

Not all of us can spend the time to do this (go looking for all the latest proxy sites), but I generally have the time, so I do it. So feel free to email me for the latest hosts file including the myspace url's and the proxy sites.

my email is s p r e c t a t o r @ y a h o o . c o m <--take out the spaces to see the email address

Another thing you can do is to modify the browser settings (ActiveX controls and javascript permissions) as I mentioned in an earlier post. If you use Microsoft's four zones to your advantage (one zone (the Trusted or 'safe" sites zone) that IS allowed to execute ActiveX controls and java scripts on your PC, and then the other three that are pretty much denied any such rights.

This will mostly make it so that even if they can find the proxy sites, they can't use them, cause the page won't work right when they get there.

Also, in order to keep the kid from going into the browser settings and changing them to get the proxy page to work, you HIDE the Security tab (in IE Properties) (which is where you change these browser settings) . .

(again, see my earlier post about how to hide the "Security" tab in the Internet Explorer properties from your kids' prying eyes, using Doug's XP Security Console, which will allow you to take away that tab so that the kids won't see it)

for more details about how to do this, or if you have any questions about how, feel free to email me . .

Another thing you can do is buy one of those monitoring programs (one that is a keylogger (captures all keystrokes, so you know what your kid typed), and some of them (like the one I use (Spector pro from spectorsoft(the program is called something like that). . ) take a screenshot (take a picture of the screen every so often (you can set the interval, so you can have it take a pic every 30 seconds, or every 15 seconds, or 45 seconds, or whatever. . and it saves it onto your hard drive, and you can replay it later like a video and see what your kid has been doing (and viewing, and who they have been talking to) on the computer . .
(some of them will even email you with an activity report showing you what your kid has been doing on the computer).

The prices for these vary, with some of the best ones being like $100 or so. . some are considerably less. . you can look up reviews of monitoring (parental monitoring) programs at download.com, or cnet.com, I'm sure. .

If you use a program like this, the kid doesn't know it's there, generally (they are all pretty stealthy), and you can find out what sites your kids are going to and if they are using a proxy, you can find out what proxy they are using and block it (if, by chance, it's one that you haven't blocked yet).

There are a couple other ways also, one of them where you modify the TCP/IP settings on your network card and basically you set it to only allow access to sites you enter (the urls you enter in those settings), and no other place on the internet can be gotten to. I haven't done this, had an IT network guy tell me he had done it on their home PC, and it works great, he says. Again, my knowledge of how to do this is spotty and I haven't tried it yet (haven't had to).

Hope this helps. Again, feel free to email me with any questions.

Eventually I was able to block this site in the hosts file. It seems to me I had to put three or four entries into the hosts file to do it, but eventually I got it to work.

http://216.178.38.121/ is myspace's ip domain, block any content loading from this address and no matter what they do they won't be able to access it.

Add rules: Block 216.178.38.121
Block it in your browser, whatever external applications you have, any walls you have, etc.

Don't go by domain name, domain name blocking won't work, cheats like the one I made (dangerstudio.com/myspace.html) utilize frames to get the data from http://216.178.38.121/ which is myspace; what people don't happen to block. If you were to block this address, there's no way anyone would be able to load any data from the server.

G'luck.

Smile hey all is this not a simpler method

hey all

i come across this thread as i was browsing the forum. i am new to the forum so be gentle with me lol.

This might be a stupid idea maybe but with all my experience in routers and D-Link boxes they do a very very good job at bloking website access.

You can buy a Dlink box for about 40 quid UK GBP and enter the two url's myspace.com www.myspace.com and also myspace.co.uk www.myspace.co.uk etc and the dlink bax with filter that url out no matter what the IP is.

just a thought maybe it has been already mentioned but hardware site and ip filtering is much more reliable and effective than software on the host PC.

you could get that one bit more advance and setup a Linux box and use IpTables in the linux kernel which is free and run your internet network through the linux box. all you need is a crappy pentium or pentium2 if you want a bit extra compile time. oh and 2 network card one for data in and the other for data out.

I'd say a linux firewalled box or buy a D-Link is about the best you can get for this if you ask me.
