Monitoring software and servers

Does anyone know anything about monitoring software and servers? I am building some websites which I plan to use as portals. I was thinking of buying some website monitoring software so I know how many people have logged onto my websites and when.

I was thinking of using a monitoring software called Whos Visiting but I could not download it because I needed Internet Information Server 4.0.

My questions is do you recommend any monitoring software and servers? In order to answer my questions you do need to consider certain facts:

1. I will have about 12 websites, these websites are not big they just acts as a link to other websites. Some websites are just one page.

2. I am trying to start up a business and eventhough I want a decent server I dont want to spend too much.

3. The tools I am using to build my websites are provided by certain companies and they will also put my websites on line and host it. If my websites are being hosted by someone else apart from me this means they are using their server to host my websites. If I buy a server and the monitoring software will it be impossible for me to use them on my websites since my websites are already being hosted by someone else? I hope these questions make sense basically I want means of verifying traffick on my sites just in case these websites providers try to rip me off.

Lastly is it possible to use monitoring software without a server? If you can help I would really appreciate it.

Usually web hosting company / services providers will provid all the details you are looking for, they have management pages that are automated which can give you number of hit , IP address of visitor, type of browser user to access you site, type of OS access your site, detailed per day / per month / per year and much much more...... so if you don't want to spend lot of money the you better off going with a good service provider.

As far as IIS 4.0 goes, that's ancient history, no one uses IIS 4.0 now, that NT 4.0 stuff.

Even if you go out and buy a monitoring software (which will be in $1000's ) I don't think you could install it on your service providers computer.......UNLESS you get a dedicated server $$$$$ and still that wouldn't guarantee if service provider would be willing to support the software.

Check out the following site, there are many service provider on the list and almost all of them will give to detail information I have mentioned above, and they are dirt cheap.

Before purchasing try this one:
http://www.sales-n-stats.com/free_edition.html

I'm using the program since January and I'm very satisfied with it. The free version has some limitations on the number of web traffic that can be analyzed, but it should be ok for small sites and for testing of course

As far as I know it is possible to gather statistics from several web sites by one installation of Sales-n-Stats.

If the limitations are ok for you, you can use the free version.

Sales-n-Stats requires a php script (they call it "Data Collector") to be installed on the web sites which statistics you would like to track. If you can put php-scripts on your web sites, it shouldn't be a problem, I guess.

Sales-n-Stats downloads website statistics to a local PC, so, you can analyze it off-line and sometimes connect to the Internet to update the data.

Hope this help you.
